Bagalamukhi: The Goddess Who Silences All Evil

“What should I do when I feel oppressed?” a friend once asked me. There are many ways to approach such situations. Some say the best defense is attack — but why take on God’s work yourself? Allow things to follow their natural course.

Among the ten goddesses of the Mahavidya Tantra is Bagalamukhi, the paralyzer of evil. She represents a feminine aspect of the Divine itself — an archetypal force whose presence can immobilize any parasite, whether spiritual or human. Her power is not rooted in fury in the conventional sense, but in karmic precision — a surgical force that muffles and neutralizes negative vibrations and waves.

Bagalamukhi is the goddess who freezes harm, the goddess of Stambhana — the mystical act of cutting whatever moves against truth. Whether that movement is an enemy’s intent, a court decree, a karmic whirlwind, or the inner storm of unintegrated thoughts, her presence suspends it with elegance and exactitude.

The name Bagala is believed to be derived from Valga, meaning “bridle” or “to control”. Mukhi means “face” or “mouth”. Thus, Bagalamukhi is She Who Has the Power to Bridle the Tongue, to still the speech of slanderers, the thoughts of the anxious, and the winds of delusion.

But to reduce Her to linguistic interpretation would be to miss Her quantum essence. In psycho-energetic terms, Bagalamukhi is the frequency of command over distortion — a frequency accessible only to those who have transcended reactive morality and anchored themselves in the eye of the storm.

She is often depicted with one hand gripping the tongue of a demon, while the other raises a cudgel (gada), poised to strike. This is not cruelty. This is discipline in its divine form: the assertion of truth over deception, stillness over chaos, power over panic. The tongue, in many traditions, is a symbol of karma — for it is with the tongue that we lie, curse, seduce, betray, and shape spells. When Bagalamukhi holds the tongue, she halts karma at the root.

Bagalamukhi is invoked interrupt one’s own self-sabotage, to bind the scripts of fear, rage, gossip, or shame before they take shape in reality. She is a psychic firewall.

In neuropsychological terms, she represents cognitive inhibition, the ability to suppress intrusive thoughts or unhelpful speech. In karmic terms, she is the seal of the Word, the undoing of verbal spells cast through lifetimes of unconscious speech.

She rules over the solar plexus chakra, Manipura, the center of power and identity. When properly invoked, her energy reclaims the sovereignty of speech and will — aligning your verbal vibration with your divine intent.

Mantra for Invocation

To invoke her presence and bind the forces of chaos, one may chant:

ॐ ह्लीं बगलामुखि सर्वदुष्टानां वाचं मुखं पदं स्तम्भय जिव्हां कीलय बुद्धिं विनाशय ह्लीं ॐ स्वाहा
Om Hleem Bagalaamukhi Sarva Dushtanam Vaacham Mukham Padam Stambhaya, Jivhaam Keelaya, Buddhim Vinaashaya Hleem Om Swaha

At the same time, the mantra sound HLEEM holds the power to invoke the presence of Goddess Bagalamukhi whenever needed. There are also special ways to honor and impress the Goddess, drawing her favor more swiftly. For example, wearing yellow garments. On May 5th, you may dedicate more elaborate rituals to this cosmic force.

Create a Sankalpa — a clear affirmation — that includes your own name and the purpose of your sadhana (practice). For instance: “I, [your name], undertake this practice for protection against… / for the resolution of conflict with…”

You may also offer yellow sweets, yellow flowers, or turmeric as sacred offerings.

Practical Ritual

  • Sit in stillness, spine upright, candles facing East.
  • Vibrate the mantra 7 or 21 times, letting the sound “Hleem” resonate in the navel.
  • Visualize a golden yellow field emanating from your solar plexus, forming a shield around your body.
  • Imagine all opposing forces (internal or external) freezing mid-motion, suspended, witnessed, but disempowered.
  • Close the ritual with silence — no words, no thoughts, only presence.
